What are the top emerging trends for travel in 2024? To find out, the Expedia Group – which brings together the websites Expedia, Abritel and Hotels.com – analyzed its internal data and the results of a study carried out with thousands of travelers between 1er September 2022 and August 31, 2023. Here are the key takeaways:

The increasingly sought after “removal”

According to Expedia Group research, alternative destinations, which are often more accessible, are trending among travelers. More than a third of them have already booked one of these destinations considered less busy (48%) and more unusual (40%). Some are also seeing a significant increase in applications compared to last year, such as Taipei (+2,786%), Paros (+193%), Liverpool (+171%), Istria (+102%), Bergen (+97 %), Palermo (+89%) or Quebec (+60%)

Traveling: a way to experience important moments with family or friends

In 2024, the French want to spend more time with their loved ones, family or friends. Almost 30% believe that going on vacation or a weekend with other people is the best way to celebrate an event. Among the top must-see holiday or weekend events: an important birthday (35%) and a wedding anniversary (24%).

Choice of accommodation: outdoor facilities increasingly taken into account

A swimming pool, a beautiful garden, a jacuzzi on the terrace or an outdoor kitchen, these little extras are sought after for stays with family or friends. Almost half of French people consider that the exterior amenities of a holiday rental are the most important elements when choosing a place to stay, far ahead of the interior amenities of the rental (22%).

The atmosphere: an important selection criterion for hotels

Reviews containing the word “environment” increased by an average of 1,090% compared to last year : 85% of French people consider the atmosphere of a hotel to be an important criterion when booking. The level of service and attention given to hotel guests, the music, the interior decoration or the lighting of the hotel are particularly appreciated.

Films, series, music increasingly influence stay choices

More than half of French people aged between 18 and 44 say they researched or booked a trip to a destination after seeing it in a television series or film (51%). 35% recognize that television series and films have even more influence on their travel plans than before (35%). Music also plays an inspiring role: 59% of French people surveyed said they would probably go to a concert outside their city, and more than 40% said a concert would be a perfect excuse to discover a new destination.

The survey was conducted on behalf of Expedia Brands (Expedia, Hotels.com, Abritel and Wotif) by OnePoll, a global strategic research company. It was held online from September 12 to October 5, 2023 in North and South America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region with a set of reference panels. Around 20,000 people living in 14 countries were interviewed, including 1,000 in France. They were adults planning a national or international trip in the next three years. OnePoll is a partner company of MRS (Market Research Society), a member of ESOMAR and the British Polling Council.
