Sofitel Old Cataract in Aswan: a hotel with history
The Old Cataract Hotel was born in 1899 under the leadership of tourism visionary: Thomas Cook. Its name is due to the spectacular effect created by the collision of the Nile with the terrain’s granite barrier; the first cataract of the Nile. The location was ideal to take advantage of the availability of the town of Aswan, a little to the north; while enjoying the dry desert climate that made it an ideal winter resort. During the second and third decades, the establishment reached its peak. It was the jazz age, New art, horse races and felucca regattas on the Nile… It is a golden age admirably described by Agatha Christie in her novel “Death on the Nile”. Additionally, many scenes in the film were filmed in the Old Hotel Catarata. After that, the hotel was also a stopping point for all the princes princesses, dukes, duchesses, barons and baronesses of Europe. Today we were the ones who pushed the door of History.
